Caltech because I read in the brochure that students got keys to the labs and could use them 24x7. Never thought I'd have that sort of freedom, but sitting in a lab at 11 p.m. at the

IRC to smoothen the flow of chat. Can be used to acknowledge another person's speech, while not actually responding to it. Can also be used as an equivalent of throat-clearing, indicating that you have something to say which will follow afterward.
