Huh? If you look at the top music of December, 1971, they're all songs you probably like. Pop music appeals to the masses, and the bestseller list was a fairly accurate indicator of what we were humming. All of us.

The way to understand lists that aren't vintage pop music is this: it isn't one list. It's four or five, mushed together. You have the list of rock acts, overlaid with the list of comic book heroes, etc. There isn't one person (at least I hope not) who's interested in all of these articles.

Web-Wide Data: "When visiting and interacting with websites we share important data about ourselves: Netflix knows some movies I watch, Amazon knows some books I read, and Last.fm knows some music I listen to.

While this data enables these services to provide additional value - Amazon suggests books; Last.fm notifies me of concerts - there’s two major issues: (i) the data is not accessible by the user; (ii) the data is site-centric.

For example, despite Netflix knowing some movies I watch, they don’t know about my movie activity across other sites. And there’s no easy way for me to let them know.

Therein lies the problem to site-centric datasets that aren’t user controlled: each site represents a fraction of our total web activity within a given vertical. Increasingly our interactions within a vertical are web-wide. For movies, we read reviews on Rotten Tomatoes or IMDB, watch trailers on Apple, buy tickets on Fandango, rent from Netflix, and buy discs from Amazon."

Leopold Bloom is the fictional protagonist and antihero[1] of James Joyce's novel Ulysses, assuming the role of the 'Odysseus' character. Like the Greek hero in The Odyssey, he is absent at the beginning of the story, and does not feature until episode four of the novel (itself the opening episode of part two). Joyce introduces Bloom to the reader with the distinctive (and now semi-famous) words:

Mr Leopold Bloom ate with relish the inner organs of beasts and fowls. He liked thick giblet soup, nutty gizzards, a stuffed roast heart, liverslices fried with crustcrumbs, fried hencods' roes. Most of all he liked grilled mutton kidneys which gave to his palate a fine tang of faintly scented urine.

Born in 1866, Bloom is the only son of Rudolf Virág (a Hungarian from Szombathely who emigrated to Ireland, converted from Judaism to Protestantism, changed his name to Rudolph Bloom and later committed suicide), and of Ellen Higgins, an Irish Protestant. They lived in Clanbrassil Street, Portobello. He married Marion (Molly) Tweedy on 8 October 1888. The couple have one daughter, Millicent (Milly), born in 1889; their son Rudolph (Rudy), born in December 1893, died after eleven days. The family live at 7 Eccles Street in Dublin.

Ulysses focuses primarily on Bloom and on the contemporary odyssey he embarks upon through Dublin over the course of the single day of 16 June 1904, and the various types of people and themes he encounters (although episodes 1 to 3, as well as 9 and to a lesser extent 7, concentrate more on Stephen Dedalus, who in the plan of the book represents the Telemachus to Bloom's Odysseus). Joyce aficionados celebrate 16 June as 'Bloomsday'.

As he goes about his day, Bloom's thoughts primarily portray him as somewhat preoccupied with the affair between Molly and her manager (Hugh 'Blazes' Boylan); and, prompted by the funeral of friend Paddy Dignam, the death of his child, Rudy. His absence of a son may be what leads him to take a shine to Stephen, whom he goes out of his way to take care of in the book's latter episodes, rescuing him from a brothel, walking him back to his own house and even offering him a place there to study and work. Also encountered are his sometime chauvinistic attitudes, his penchant for voyeurism and his unfaithful epistolary alter ego, 'Henry Flower'. Bloom detests violence, and his relative indifference to Irish nationalism leads to disputes with some of his peers (most notably 'the Citizen' in the Cyclops chapter).

Writer-director Mel Brooks adopted the name 'Leo Bloom' for the mousy accountant in his film/musical The Producers. Leo is a nervous accountant, prone to panic attacks and who keeps a security blanket to calm himself. Nevertheless it is Leo who has the idea of how to make money from a failed play.

Former Pink Floyd bandmate Roger Waters references Leopold Bloom in his song 'Flickering Flame' as sitting with Molly Malone.

It has also been suggested by Jeffrey Meyer in 'Orwell's Apocalypse: Coming Up For Air, Modern Fiction Studies' that George Orwell's primary character George Bowling in 'Coming Up For Air' was modelled on Leopold Bloom.

Some Brands are more Lijit than others.: "The last few days I was in New York at the OMMA Global Conference. The OMMA Conference gathers Ad Industry experts to discuss where online advertising has been and where it’s going. This year, the title was “The New Socialism” and talked about how social media is often the key to engagement between brands and audiences. Of course, we already knew that. Lijit is based on engaging your readers with your Brand through all the social connections you have. It was fun to see Madison Avenue coming to the same conclusion.

There were lots of good panels including one entitled “The Mommy Bloggers - What It’s Like When Marketers Really, Really Want You”. That panel featured a couple of Lijit publishers and many thought-provoking insights.

OMMA was very interesting to me because lately, we have been approached by some major brands to help them reach very specific audiences within our publisher base. When there’s a convergence between a publisher’s audience and a Brand, we offer the opportunity to the publisher. Sometimes these are specific Ads within a publisher’s search results page, sometimes these are display campaigns that we offer to our publishers for the content pages, and sometimes they are cool interactive applications that run on the publisher’s site.

Of course, we only offer these opportunities to our publishers if they have expressed an interest in monetizing their site with us. We respect that many publishers simply want to deliver a great experience for their readers and monetizing is not important. For those that are interested, major brands are looking for audiences like yours, and we talk with them every day.

If you’re a Lijit publisher and have not heard from us about a specific opportunity, it’s most likely that we haven’t found the right opportunity for you yet. Time to be Frank » Blog Archive » Land of the Misfit Toys: "I tend not to post when I have a lot on my mind that I am trying to work through. Sometimes it may be personal, other times work or even career. In the past few years I have had a lot of new things happening in my life that cause me to ponder many things, especially about the future. Recently I have been thinking about my own career path and what it all means. Social media has added an interesting realm to my life and I am not going to say it hasn’t brought struggles too. I strive to be as open as possible with things, but sometimes you have to come to conclusions on your own.

I love leading the way, whether it be with a team or a movement for Customer Service. I never strive for the status quo, especially with work. We all need to continually evolve our abilities and companies need to broaden their horizons to meet an ever changing Customer. My style is not playing politics but instead concentrating on the Customer story and what is in front of me at the time. Sometimes in doing this people that are close to the process work off of their own historical information. I am lucky to work with many that have great experience in the cable and telecommunications industry; I learn a lot from them every day. My background is financial services, which provides more of an outsider view. Sometime this makes me feel like a misfit.

I talk to many businesses regarding their efforts in social media. In fact I have been approached by many companies about helping them build their efforts. Most companies channel their social media through marketing or PR. It is funny the reaction I receive when I tell them that I am just a simple Customer Service guy. The marketers tend to be so stuck on the brand and sales, so they do not always see the community and relationship aspects in the space. I have many friends in marketing that have built a similar view as mine, but they are already successful in the space. Some in PR concentrate on the message as opposed to the relationship. My view is this space is about the Customers, helping, listening and having conversations with them. So as I talk to these different companies I recognize what a misfit that I may be.

I then look at all my friends in social media and I realize how different we all are. It is these differences that make social media such a great place and a way to hear others perspectives. As I was sitting pondering recent events, my own place in life, and how we all connect, I started to realize we are all in this place of misfit toys creating a home for all to enjoy no matter who they are, what they have been through, or where they are heading. Being this misfit is a trophy we all carry because we are leading and doing things in a different manner. Whether we are doing this online, at work, or within our home life we are carving this new path. The misfit toys have found their home with each other."

I was born in San Francisco, but mostly grew up in Santa Cruz, CA.
As a kid I started playing around with sound recording and media
manipulation using any recording device and noise-maker I could get my
hands on. I was a straight-up dork. Inspired by The Residents and Negativland, I found anyway I could to make weird sounds. I worked at the Boardwalk
in Santa Cruz for $2.80 an hour when I was thirteen and earned enough to
afford my
first Pentax portable VHS VCR and camera. This somehow began to funnel my dorkiness into a possible career.

I began to get into computers around this time as well. Text-based
Interactive Fiction games totally fascinated me and gave me an
understanding of how immersive the medium could be. I quickly tried to
find as many ways as possible to combine computing with audio and video
using a Commodore 64, then an Apple II. Let's face it, you could put text over video and add a rainbow swirl effect, but it was something. I soon discovered
Usenet and haven’t been offline since.

In 1989, I was accepted on scholarship to Brooks Institute of
Photography in Santa Barbara to study cinematography. But at the last
minute, I decided I was too punk rock and perhaps too afraid to go and founded an independent
record label called “Quagmire, The Label” instead.

The label lasted several years. We released many albums by A Western
Front, The Slowest Train in the World, Laughing Sam’s Dice, Baby, Elijah Craig, and others you never heard of. Besides running the business,
I designed all collateral, album covers, and promotional material, as
well as shot and directed music videos. Late in 1993 our national
distributor went bankrupt and locked up our inventory. We were left
with nothing but master tapes and artwork. At this point we decided we
were done with doing things the normal way. This led us to become the
first record label on the Internet, starting with a gohper site then on
the WWW. In 1994 we released the first album ever to be distributed
electronically. Then I hooked up with The Internet Underground Music
Archive (IUMA) to become their Art Director. This is where I met Rob Lord, Jeff Patterson, Jon Luini, Ian Rogers, and Ryan Melcher, among many other very talented and creative innovators.

Later in 1994 I co-founded Artists for Revolution through Technology
(ARTnet) and we developed the first online art museum called the
Internet Arts Museum for FREE (IAMfree). ARTnet was a not-for-profit
organization created to discover and distribute digital art for free.
Music, photography, literature, and interactive pieces were exhibited
at artnet.org/iamfree. ARTnet worked with the International Computer
Music Association and Jon Luini to produce the first live netcast using
Asynchronous Transfer Mode.

Tired of starving, in 1995 I co-founded LVL Interactive and designed
and built Egghead.com, then later that year, Cisco’s Internet Junction
which was their first venture in e-commerce and digital software
distribution. I became Chief Information Architect and then CCO of
I-Storm Studios specializing in e-commerce development and online
product marketing experiences. Our clients included Cisco, Disney, Sun,
HP, AIG, Netscape, Sony, Philips, Oracle, Sears, Egghead, Palm,
Computer Associates, E-Trade, DirecTV, Acer, beyond.com, Toshiba,
Digital Island, fatbrain.com, Bank of America, Broadvision, The Fox
Network, The Burning Man Project, Warner Bros. Records, Winamp, Grand
Royal Records, IUMA, Addicted to Noise, and others... I worked with
some of the greatest people back then. Steve Venuti, Chris Coluzzi, Cale Peeples, Ramon Colcer, Pat Goddard, Dave Brinda, Danny Vendrell, Stuart Mangrum, and Scott Beale, among many others.

I was once selected by NetGuide magazine as one of the 25 most
influential people online with Charles Schwab, Al Gore, and Susie on
Sex... so what does that tell you?

My design and product work has been featured in
several books and other magazines including Lynda Wienman's web design
series, 10 Secrets to Web Success, Designing Interactive Communities,
The Web After Hours, Wired, Time Magazine, and Entertainment Weekly.

I started at Yahoo! in 2001 a month after Terry Semel and the gang
came on board. It was during the first big round of layoffs and it felt a little strange.
While at Yahoo! I headed up social commerce application development,
process development, and did extensive work on the user experience of
search and the process of finding and comparing products.

I left Yahoo! in 2006 to join the social search start-up Wink
as Director of Product Management. There, I worked with a great team to
transform the site and technology to create the first people search
engine for online personas.

In July of 2007 I returned to Yahoo! to become the Senior Manager of Products for Yahoo! Brickhouse.

I'm passionate about my work and my life. Sometimes they get rather
enmeshed. My hobbies include the world of digital music distribution,
building kick-ass online communities, collecting music, photography,
and playing the Theremin

I live in Santa Cruz near the Mystery Spot with my wife Jane and my two children. I have a dog named Thurston and a cat named Daisy.

Those of you who live in your Gmail inboxes usually want to know what's happening with your email more instantly than standard fetch mail on your phone allows. Sure, using Gmail in your mobile browser gives you all the benefits of conversation threading and starring, but you still have to refresh every time you want to check for new mail.

When we launched Google Sync for Contacts and Google Calendar earlier this year, an over-the-air, always-on connection to sync mail was noticeably absent. We heard your requests loud and clear, and starting today you can use Google Sync to get your Gmail messages pushed directly to your iPhone, iPod Touch, or Windows Mobile device.

You can set up push Gmail by itself or choose to sync your Contacts and/or Calendar as well. If you're using an iPhone, make sure you're running iPhone OS version 3.0 or above (on your device, click Settings > General > About and scroll down until you see Version). If your software is out of date, follow Apple's upgrade instructions. Then, visit m.google.com/sync from your computer for set up instructions. If you're already using Google Sync, you can just enable push mail.

Once you're set up, new messages are normally pushed to your phone within seconds. While this type of speed is pretty awesome, push connections tend to use more power than fetching at intervals, so don't be surprised if your battery life isn't quite what it used to be. We've done a lot of work to optimize power usage, but if you prefer to save battery life, you can always turn off push in your phone's settings and fetch mail every 30 or 60 minutes instead.

A couple weeks back, we announced a partnership with Socialvibe. As the blog owner, you get to pick which charity you support in the gadget configuration - then your blog's visitors are invited to do something (for example: rate a video, watch an ad, sign a petition). Each time they do that something, the advertiser who's sponsoring the gadget pledges a certain amount to the charity you've chosen.

I picked charity: water, and in two weeks my blog's readers have raised nearly 7,500 gallons of water for Charity Water. That's really remarkable, and I hope to see the number continue to go up.

What's been intriguing to me has been the effect it's had on me as the blog owner. I've watched the number climb and check the site a couple times a day to see where it's at. I'm thinking about picking a new charity each month to try and spread the love a bit, but also to re-engage prior visitors. It's a fun exercise, and it's quite fulfilling to know that something so simple can have such a meaningful impact on people who need the help.

Leaving aside socioeconomic issues that prevent many parts of the world from having access to computers, mobile phones, or broadband, the panacea of an always-connected populace to access with all content, regardless of location, computer or Web browser, is still very far away. Thanks to overzealous individual governments or convoluted legalities that often involve copyright, the Web you see is likely far different from that enjoyed by the country bordering yours. Even in my short visit to the UK this week, I was annoyed to find that some of my data was blocked thanks to my newfound geography.

The phrase "geotardation" is one I often see from my cranky Canadian friend Steven Hodson, or his colleague, Duncan Riley, as the pair fight through blockades from the north or from Australia. But I haven't had to experience it, thanks to being in the domestic United Stats for the vast majority of my life - and started think about it more this week as I hit site after site that behaved differently if I was surfing via an IP address that resolved to ".co.uk" instead of a simple US IP address. Google put a great post up (video and slideshow too) about how Google handles duplicate content and multiple site issues.
I’ve always told my clients that Google doesn’t penalize sites and site owners for duplicate content. They just concentrate more on relevance and distinction.
As long as duplicate is legitimate and not spam (intentional manipulation) it’s valid for Google Search.
There’s a definite difference between penalties and site SEO. Duplicate content, link dilution and URL structures don’t necessarily make for good SEO.
Also, another misconception. Multiple domains hurt sites. Wrong. multiple domains are great SEO. If correctly managed.

Panasonic's Robotic Bed is set to change that by automatically transforming from a static bed to a mobile wheelchair... and back. Once converted, the robotic chair can navigate the home while avoiding obstacles with 'no need for training,' according to Panasonic. The canopy is fitted with a television and plugs into the home network so you can control home appliances and view security cameras. Obviously, its primary purpose is to give people with limited mobility more independence. However, bloggers can dream can't we? A driving event and a 10K all in one (long) weekend. Yep, that’s how I roll.: "

I was originally going to go out of town for Memorial Day weekend, but when those plans fell through I decided to sign up for a driving event at the brand new High Plains Raceway with the Z Car Club of Colorado (ZCCC) and participate in the BolderBoulder. It sounded like the makings for a SWEET weekend, and boy howdy, it sure was.

High Plains Raceway. All I can say is, "WOW." That is an amazing 2.55 miles worth of track. The many and varied elevation changes take what are already challenging corners to a new, mind bending level. Until you have all fifteen memorized, you'd best just take the course slowly, savoring all of the late apexes and blind entries, lest you rocket yourself right off the curb-free track. (I think about five of the fifteen corners are blind. It's just you, the horizon, blue sky, and a whole lotta' hope.) As it stands right now I think my favorite corners are 6 ("Danny's Lesson"), 11 ("Bobsled"), 12 ("Ladder to Heaven"), and 13/14/15 ("Prairie Corkscrew").

Fortunately, though you might not think so, the first two sessions of the morning were sopping wet thanks to a steady, un-Colorado like, late spring rain. That forced us all to slow down, which gave a lot of time to focus on learning the line, but made for some filthy cars.

As the rain let up (for all of an hour or two in the afternoon), we finally got to push it a bit more. But then the rain returned…

3 Moments before the sky re-opened

Even though it was soaking wet nearly from start to finish – made even more soaking wet by the lack of ANY kind of permanent shelter at the track – it was a great event hosted by the Z Club at Colorado's newest and most exciting track. Wow again. Once I know the M3 and the track a bit better, I think we're all going to have a lot of fun together.

So that was Saturday. Then on Memorial Day morning I walked the BolderBoulder 10K with my friend, Susan. We had such a great time and that is such a great, fun- and joy-filled race. How they run an event of that size (with such good cheer throughout) like clockwork is a mystery to me, but one I feel we're awfully fortunate to have right in our own backyard.

The weather was beautiful and the 6.2 miles flew by, thanks to good company and a 3.8mph average pace.

5 Coming up the hill (with a gazillion other people) to Folsom Field

Crossing the finish line inside Folsom Field, its stands filled with cheering Boulderites, was pretty fantastic.

I may just have do this all again next year.

On September 10th, 2009 Lifestream found its way into AOL’s paid version of AIM for the iPhone and iPod touch. Today, exactly seven days later, Lifestream has now found its way into the free version of AIM for the iPhone and iPod touch. Coincidence? Maybe, but if Lifestream shows up in another app in exactly seven days, I will just assume it’s taking over the app world one week at a time.

Lifestream is the new addition to AOL’s lineup of social networking services. Just like in the paid version of AIM, you will notice that AIM Free Edition has a new Lifestream tab on the bottom. When accessed, it will allow you to set up a free account through Mobile Safari if you haven’t already. Google gets a patent on reading lists: "Google will probably protest that the patent they filed on reading lists was defensive. But it's a bad patent, based on an 'invention' that was already out there, being discussed openly on Scripting News at least a year before they filed it. If you can subscribe to a feed, why not subscribe to a collection of feeds? And when an item is removed, you no longer are subscribed to it, and when one is added, you are now subscribed to it.

Google should explain to the RSS community how they supposedly invented this and what their process was. If it turns out that we had prior art, they should tear up the patent and apologize from trying to hijack something that doesn't belong to them.

I worry about big companies doing awful things because they do them. It's dangerous to have Google control so much of the RSS infrastructure, from Feedburner to Google Reader to Blogger. They could easily pass information between those systems without sharing the information publicly. They could, right now, deliver features to users that competitors would be locked out of. All this built on ideas, formats, protocols and know-how that were contributed by others without any limits on how they could be used. And now this patent.

Little Ben Matson has been with our company for long enough now that we can easily make jokes at his expense. That’s always the true test, isn’t it? And fortunately for us, he can laugh at himself AND he has a blog designed to document his D&D adventures. Really…what more could we want from a co-worker?

Let’s not forget that Ben is an extraordinary team player who is willing to help out anyone at any time. Since he’s been at Lijit, he’s been put in many situations of extreme pressure and has passed all the stress tests with flying colors. Of course, he has yet to experience the famed Lijit Holiday Party. We’ll see how he does with that one. In the meantime, enjoy getting to know Ben. I can honestly say that the picture he provided me of his summer internship has to be one of the best of all time.
What is your Lijit contribution?

I am one of two Publisher Support Engineers at Lijit, and we do a variety of things around here. Whenever a blogger has a technical question, or runs into a problem with something, we work to provide the answers and solutions they’re looking for. Whenever we can’t handle an issue ourselves, we track down the people that can and make sure things get resolved properly. But my job is not just troubleshooting, I also get to trick-out the special accounts we create with a bunch of custom features for the different business development deals that go on around here. One of the things I really enjoy about my particular role at Lijit is seeing all the different ways our products get used, and all the neat things our company can do.

Since there is very little mainstream about the so-called mainstream media, it’s time for all of us to stop using such a misleading term – and come up with something new.

Is the New York Times or NBC News really mainstream when they ignore the Van Jones story?

Isn’t there something wrong when Glenn Beck, who doesn’t even pretend to be a journalist, scoops the “mainstream media” on all sorts of stories – from Van Jones to Acorn, to name just two recent examples?

The fact is there are lots of stories that Americans care deeply about that simply hold no interest for so-called mainstream journalists. I get the impression that if FOX News decides to run with a story that may, for example, reflect badly on President Obama or one that puts a spotlight on some liberal judge who let’s child molesters off with (barely) a slap on the wrist, the mainstream media won’t go near it. That may be regrettable, but I fear it’s true.

So, here’s where all of you come in. What term should we come up with to replace “mainstream media”?

The Vision

We created Clipmarks because we're fascinated by the moments that snap people out of a day dream. Lets face it, when we read articles in newspapers, magazines, or on the web, we often drift in and out of space. But then there are those moments that smack us in the face and make us take notice. Offline, they're the moments when you reach for a highlighter or pair of scissors. But online, what do we do when something within a web page jumps out at us? Bookmarking the whole page is not an adequate solution because it doesn't let us shine the spotlight on the parts that matter the most to us. And copy/paste, forget about it.

Think about when John Kennedy said "Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country." That line was part of a much longer speech. Imagine if instead of being able to clip that line from the speech, people were forced to listen to the entire speech every time.

Now imagine if that was a web page. What if you were forced to bookmark the entire page, but you really wanted to clip the part that mattered most. How many people would have the time or attention span for the whole thing? How many people would even know about that famous line? That's why it's imperative that people be able to clip the best parts of web pages and be able to save and share their clips without having to bookmark the entire page. That's why we created Clipmarks.

Our hope is that people will clip the great moments they experience on the web. We often refer to these as the woah moments. Many will clip for themselves and some will clip for the benefit of others. People like Invictus, Haraya, Djiezes, Wildcat, Deepti and so many others on the Clipmarks site are posting amazing clips about all sorts of topics -- teaching people about things they wouldn't normally have the time or attention span for.

Whether you use Clipmarks to manage what you find or discover new things, we are committed to making your web experience more fun and efficient.

10 Things About Us

We believe that information is easier and more enjoyable to digest in small portions. Kind of like movie trailers, sushi and cliff notes.
We're based in New York City.

Some of our hobbies are: EricG loves playing shortstop. Derek makes beautiful furniture. Adam plays the guitar. W quits smoking (looks like it could be for real this time). Skiff is a Podcasting guru.
Each of us has at least one pet. Edit: Sadly, Adam had to give his cat back to her original owner when he and Clipette moved into a pet-unfriendly apartment.
During a typical update to our site, we consume more coffee than the entire country of Luxembourg does all year.
We considered changing our name to clip.o.licio.us but wimped out.
In the first annual Clipmarks geeks vs cool guys bowling match, the geeks defeated the cool guys as Derek rolled 3 straight strikes to close out the last frame. He said it was the greatest moment of his life.

After careers in history, libraries, and the law, I joined the rest of my family in Arizona over 20 years ago and opened The Poisoned Pen in 1989 as a kind of hobby to support my book habit. Who knew? Here we are with a wonderful staff, phenomenal customers, worldwide trade, and a web of relationships with authors, publishers, readers, and colleagues that is beyond price. I read everything, so while we began as a Mystery Bookstore we're today an independent bookstore specializing in quality fiction and nonfiction with forays into delights like history, food, travel, wordsmithing—anything we like.

I'm especially pleased with a 1998 Edgar Allan Poe Award nomination as editor of the Best Critical/Biographical Work and to have received the MWA Raven Award for outstanding contributions outside the field of creative writing. And with some 12 nominations as Bookseller of the Year.

I'm a member of The Mystery Writers of America, The British Crime Writers Association, The Crimewriters of Canada, The Valley Independent Booksellers Association, and the American Booksellers Association/Book Sense, and co-founded the Independent Mystery Booksellers Association. My husband Robert L. Rosenwald and I founded Poisoned Pen Press in 1997. I am Editor in Chief. So I own the bookstore and he works for me; he owns the press and I work for him—thus we stay happily married.

It’s not the last chapter; it is merely Chapter 11.” Fred Lebolt, President and Publisher of (and prepare for attribution to an incredibly long title) Sun Times Newspaper Group Suburban News Division and New Media Integration, kicked the Transformation of News Media session off with this rather epic sound bite. Fred was joined on the panel by Mark Marvel (MSNBC), Kinsey Wilson (NPR), Kay Madati (CNN) and moderator David Griesing (The Chicago Tribune). Rather than cranking out a giant post attempting to summarize an incredible panel, I thought I’d share a few more sound bites that caught my attention and captured the key takeaways. Local is incredibly valuable in the new model: “Our ability to share deeply relevant local content and engagement is key…. One of the keys of local content is the database- not merely disseminating the local news but using the apps model and making that content very easy to target and easy for the audience to find.” –Lebolt “Our view is that, in the future, no single or handful of news organizations will dominate the local scene…. Ical In the age of rapid cycles and connected data, how long are we going to have to settle for dumb software?

Here's the detail screen from iCal. If I write a long text to go with an appointment, the only way to see the whole thing is to hit 'edit.' But I don't want to edit it, I just want to see it.

If I try to schedule an appointment for 2 pm, it requires me to not only hit the 2, but also select pm. I have never once had a meeting at 2 am. Shouldn't it know that?

When I type in someone's name, how come it doesn't know that this is someone I know, correspond with and meet with often? Why isn't it connected?

I have tens of thousands of people in my address book. Some of these folks were put there ten years ago and, alas, are dead or long gone. Do I really have to go through and delete people manually? Why isn't my address book smart enough to sort the list in reverse order of use, so I can see records I haven't encountered in seven years first and start from there? Or, better, why doesn't this address book hook up with other address books of trusted peers and automatically correct and update?

The people who make desktop software are making themselves obsolete. When you start developing on the web, your default is to be smart, to interact and to be open (with other software and with your users). Desktop software (like Word) is insanely unaware of what I do, why I do it and who I do it with. Right now, the desktop folks have the momentum of the incumbent. Not for long. Time to hurry."
